That changes which muscles you use and how long you can sustain a pace.
Typists trained on heavy machines often report modern keyboards feeling unstable, because there's no resistance telling their fingers where the bottom is.
Going the other way is easier. Somebody trained on a laptop usually finds a manual typewriter exhausting within a page.
So how do you convert a number
Honestly, you don't. There's no reliable conversion factor and anybody offering one is inventing it.
If you want a rough sense, add the error penalty back. A 70 with five errors under the old rules was around 80 gross, which puts it in a range your test would recognize.
That's an estimate, not a conversion, and it depends entirely on how many errors were made.
The safer framing is that old certificates measured accuracy under pressure, and modern tests measure raw speed with accuracy reported separately.
Why old numbers still sound impressive
Because they were impressive. Professional typists trained for years and typed all day.
That's a level of practice almost nobody has now. Most people type a lot, but not in long sustained bursts of clean prose from dictation.
Sustained accuracy over five minutes on unfamiliar text is genuinely hard, and it's the exact skill the old tests measured.

Dictation was part of the old test
Office typing tests were rarely about copying text from a page in front of you.
