What the research actually measured
Two findings are worth separating, because people mix them up constantly.
The first is speed. Standing and moving workstations produce slightly slower typing than sitting. That result shows up repeatedly.
The second is accuracy, and this is the surprise. In the active workstation trial, typing speed fell on the active stations without any change in typing errors. Forty four people, four office setups, four days.
That combination tells you something specific. Your fingers still know where the keys are. What changes is how fast you can drive them.
I read the trial rather than the headlines about it, because the headlines all said standing made people better at everything, which is not what the typing numbers say.
How big is the drop, honestly
Small. Small enough that a bad night's sleep costs you more.
One study measured standing at about 37 words per minute against walking at about 35, in the same group of students. Those are slow baseline numbers because they're untrained typists, but the gap between postures is the useful part.
A couple of words per minute is inside the noise of a single one minute test.
So don't diagnose this from one run. If you want to know your own number, take five tests sitting and five standing on the same day.
I ran that comparison on myself before writing this and the standing average came out three words per minute lower. Well within a normal spread.
Why standing costs anything at all
It isn't mystical. It's that your arms have lost a support.
Sitting, your forearms usually rest on something. Armrests, the desk edge, or just the mass of your body braced in a chair.
Standing, your shoulders are holding your arms up. That's a low grade constant load, and it's the reason a standing session gets worse over time rather than starting badly.
Your first ten minutes standing will test almost the same as sitting. Your fortieth minute usually won't.
That's a fatigue curve, not a posture penalty, and it responds to setup.
The desk height mistake almost everyone makes
Here's the single biggest lever, and most people get it wrong in the same direction.
Standing desks get set too high. People raise them until the surface feels comfortable to lean on, which is well above where a keyboard should sit.
Your elbows want to be at roughly ninety degrees with your forearms level or angled very slightly down. If your wrists are bending upward to reach the keys, the desk is too tall.
Too high forces your shoulders to shrug, and shrugged shoulders are what actually kills your speed after twenty minutes.
Drop the desk two centimetres and retest. Most people find their number immediately.

Wrist angle changes when you stand
This is the part nobody warns you about.
Sitting, your hands approach the keyboard from slightly below. Standing, they come from above, because your shoulders are higher relative to the desk.
That changes the angle your wrists sit at, and a wrist that's bent is a wrist that's slower and sorer.
A flat or slightly negative keyboard tilt fixes it. Fold the keyboard legs down rather than up, which is the opposite of what most people do.

Your feet matter more than your hands
Odd sentence, true anyway.
Standing on a hard floor for an hour makes you shift weight constantly, and every shift moves your whole upper body a few millimetres relative to the keyboard.
That micro movement is what turns clean typing into occasional misses on the outer keys.
An anti fatigue mat removes most of it, and it's the cheapest fix in this entire post.
Shoes matter too. I type noticeably worse standing barefoot on tile than in trainers, and I didn't expect that to be true when I checked it.
Don't stand all day, alternate
The research on standing desks is not "standing is better". It's closer to "changing position is better".
A task performance study found standing neither improved nor damaged reading comprehension and creativity compared with sitting. The posture itself is close to neutral for brain work.
What it does change is how long you can hold one position before your body complains.
So alternate. Thirty to forty minutes standing, then sit. Not because typing gets worse, but because everything gets worse when you hold any single posture too long.
Set the switch on a timer, because you will not notice on your own.
Save the standing block for the right work
A practical rule I've settled on.
Stand for the work where a couple of words per minute genuinely does not matter. Email, meetings, reading, browsing, anything conversational.
Sit for the work where speed is the point. Long drafting sessions, transcription, timed tests, anything you're being measured on.
That way you get the health benefit without paying for it in the one place it shows.

What about a keyboard tray
Worth it, if your desk won't go low enough.
Plenty of standing desks bottom out above a comfortable typing height for shorter people, and a tray gets the keyboard down to where your elbows want it.
It also separates the typing surface from the leaning surface, which quietly solves the too high problem described above.
The trade off is stability. A wobbly tray under a heavy hand is worse than a slightly high desk, so check it takes weight before you commit.
For a fixed height desk that's too tall, this is usually the only real fix short of replacing the desk.
Does the keyboard itself matter more when standing
A bit, and in a direction people don't expect.
Standing, your hands are less anchored, so a keyboard that needs a firm deliberate press is easier to control than one that fires on a whisper.
Very light switches produce more accidental keystrokes when your arms are floating. That's the one setup change I'd actually make for a standing desk.
It's a small effect against setup and fatigue, so don't buy a keyboard to solve a desk height problem.
So don't buy a keyboard to fix a desk height problem. Sort the height first and retest before you spend anything.
How to measure your own gap properly
One test proves nothing. Here's a method that does.
Take five one minute tests sitting, back to back, and write down the average. Then stand, wait five minutes so you're settled, and take five more.
Do it again the next day with the order reversed, because whichever you do second benefits from being warmed up.
If the standing average is more than five words per minute lower, that's a setup problem and it is fixable. If it's two or three, that's just the posture and it isn't worth chasing.

The fatigue test that tells you the truth
Short tests hide the real cost of a bad standing setup, because the problem is cumulative.
So take one long test after forty minutes of standing work, not before.
If your speed at minute forty is close to your speed at minute two, your setup is fine. If it's collapsed, your shoulders are doing work your desk should be doing.

What to do this week
Three things, in order, and none of them cost money except the mat.
Lower your desk until your forearms are level. Most standing desks are set too high and this is the fix that matters most.
Flatten your keyboard tilt so your wrists aren't bending up.
Put something soft under your feet.
Then measure properly with five tests each way. Whatever gap is left after those three changes is the real cost of standing, and for most people it's small enough to ignore.
