Whenever someone hits 100 WPM for the first time, two things happen. First, they feel great about it (rightly). Second, they Google 'is 100 WPM fast' to figure out if it's actually impressive or if everyone on the internet types this fast.

I've been at 92 WPM for about a year and I keep flirting with 100 in clean tests. So I went looking for the actual rank distribution data — not just 'average is 40' headlines, which are too coarse to be useful.
The short version: 100 WPM puts you in roughly the top 5-7% of all typists. That's solidly impressive. But the picture gets weirder once you slice by group, because the typing population isn't evenly distributed.

General population: top 5-7%. The average adult types 40-50 WPM and the global median is closer to 41. Hitting 100 WPM means you're roughly twice as fast as the typical person. If you're benchmarking against your office, you're easily the fastest in the room.
Online typing-test users: top 25-30%. This is the slice that surprised most people. Among people who actually take typing tests online (a self-selected group of typing nerds), 100 WPM is barely top quartile. The median Monkeytype user is around 75-80 WPM because the population is biased toward people who care about typing speed.
Competitive typists (serious community members): roughly median-to-below-median. The Monkeytype 1-minute global leaderboard cutoff for top 1000 is around 145 WPM right now. A fun stat from the data: the gap between 40 WPM (average) and 100 WPM (you, in this scenario) is actually larger than the gap between 100 and 200. The 40-to-100 jump takes years of casual exposure. The 100-to-200 jump takes years of deliberate practice. The middle is honestly the easiest part of the journey.
What 100 WPM Says About You (And What It Doesn't)
I think people overload 100 WPM with too much meaning. Here's what it actually does and doesn't say about you.
It does say you have solid touch typing technique. You can't bash a 100 WPM test using hunt-and-peck. Your fingers know where the keys are, and that took practice — even if you don't remember practicing.
It does say you're past the productivity threshold for most knowledge work. Typing is no longer a bottleneck for you in the average office job. Whatever's slowing you down at work, it's not your hands.

It does not say you're a 'fast typist' compared to the typing community. It means you're entry-level competitive. Going to your first competitive race expecting to win at 100 WPM is like showing up to a 5k race expecting to medal — you'll finish but you won't podium.
It does not predict anything about coding speed or productivity. Plenty of 80 WPM developers out-ship 110 WPM ones. Typing speed correlates weakly with output for skilled knowledge work.
What Hitting 100 WPM Took Me — A Realistic Timeline

Most people lose more time to typos than they realize. If you're at 100 WPM with 92% accuracy, fixing accuracy to 96% can push raw WPM to 108 without you typing any faster.
