Does Hand Size Affect Your Typing Speed

Small hands are not slower hands. Here's what hand size really changes, which keys cause the trouble, and the board shape that fixes it.

What it changes is reach. Small hands stretch further for the far keys, and big hands crowd the middle ones.

Both problems are solved by the board you choose rather than by the hands you have.

So if you're slow and you've been blaming your hands, the hands are almost certainly innocent. Technique and practice explain nearly all of the difference between typists.

The key spacing is fixed

Start with the thing that doesn't change, because it explains everything else.

A standard keyboard puts keys on three quarter inch centres, which is 19 mm, and that spacing has been the same for decades.

The standard was set once and everything is built to it, so a keyboard designed for a large hand and one designed for a small hand are the same keyboard.

That means the person with small hands is reaching across the same distance as everybody else, with less arm to do it with.

I checked the standard rather than trusting the figure everybody repeats, because 19 mm gets quoted as 18 and as 20 in different places. It's not a fair fight on reach. It just turns out that reach is not where speed comes from.

Why it matters less than you think

Because touch typing is not a reaching skill. It's a returning skill.

Your fingers rest on the home row, dart out to a key and come straight back. The travel is short and the same eight fingers do it thousands of times.

Small hands make that dart slightly longer for the outer keys. They don't make it harder for the eighteen or so keys that carry most English text.

So the extra distance applies to a small fraction of your keystrokes.

That's why hand size shows up as a comfort issue and an error issue long before it shows up as a speed issue.

The keys that actually cause trouble

Four of them, and they're the same four for every small handed typist.

The number row, especially the 6 and the 7, which sit at the far edge of what an index finger can reach without moving the wrist.

Backspace, tucked into the top right corner.

The far shift key, reached with the little finger while the other hand is busy.

And enter, on a board with a tall enter key.

Notice that none of these are letters. If your letter speed is fine and your punctuation is clumsy, this is why, and it's fixable.

Big hands have the opposite problem

Less discussed, and real.

Large fingers on 19 mm spacing catch the edge of the neighbouring key, so the errors are adjacent key errors rather than reach errors.

That gets worse on a laptop, where the keys are the same width but the layout is compressed and the travel is shorter.

It also gets worse with flat, low profile keycaps, because there's less of a dish to guide the fingertip into the centre.

So big hands want deeper keycaps and a full size board. Small hands want the opposite, and both are cheap to arrange.

What to change if your hands are small

Three changes, in the order they pay off.

Drop the number pad. A board without one moves your right hand inward and shortens every reach on that side, and it moves the mouse closer too.

Move the whole keyboard slightly left of centre, so the letters sit in front of your body rather than the whole board.

And consider a compact layout, where the outer keys come in closer.

Split boards and tenting

The proper fix if the reach is genuinely hurting rather than just annoying.

A split keyboard separates the two halves so each hand sits at its own shoulder width, and the opening angle is typically around 30 degrees.

Split and contoured designs also add tenting, which lifts the centre so your wrists stay neutral instead of rolling flat.

Contoured boards go further and set the keys into two curved bowls at about shoulder width.

Worth being honest here. That page says the strain benefit is widely claimed and gives no speed figures, so buy one for comfort, not for words per minute.

Do not expect a speed jump

The part people get wrong when they spend money on this.

A better fitting keyboard removes errors and removes strain. Neither of those adds much to your peak speed.

You'll usually see a small gain, and it comes from making fewer mistakes rather than from moving faster.

And you'll be slower for the first week on any new board while your hands learn it, which is normal and temporary.

I compared the two effects on my own setup and the error reduction was worth far more than the speed change.

Children and small hands

The one case where hand size genuinely limits things.

A young child cannot span the home row with the correct fingers, so the standard technique simply doesn't fit their hands yet.

That's a reason to teach position and rhythm rather than speed, and to come back to speed when the hands have grown.

Pushing a seven year old towards a words per minute target teaches them to look at the keys, which is a habit that takes years to undo.

Fingers on the right keys first. The numbers follow on their own.

Finger length is not the same as hand size

A distinction worth drawing, because they behave differently.

Span, the distance between your thumb and little finger, decides your reach.

Finger length decides how much of the key your fingertip covers, which drives adjacent key errors.

Someone can have a wide span and short fingers, or a narrow span and long ones, and the two need opposite fixes.

So check which problem you actually have. Missing the far keys is a span problem. Hitting two keys at once is a fingertip problem.

The posture check that matters more

Before you buy anything, fix the free thing.

The recommended position is forearms parallel to the ground, wrists straight, elbows at your sides and no reaching.

Most people who feel their hands are too small for a keyboard are actually sitting too far away, or too low, or with the board angled up at the back.

Correcting the desk height changes the reach more than a new keyboard does, and it costs nothing.

What actually predicts speed

Since it isn't your hands, it's worth naming what it is.

Whether you use all your fingers. Whether you look at the keys. How much you've practised, and how consistently.

Those three explain almost all of the spread between typists at any hand size.

A small handed touch typist beats a large handed hunt and peck typist every single time, and it isn't close.

You can check where you sit on the test in a couple of minutes, and the number will tell you about your technique, not your anatomy.

Laptops make both problems worse

Worth separating from the desktop answer, because a laptop changes the shape of the complaint.

Laptop keys keep the same width but sit in a compressed layout with much shorter travel, and the function row and arrows get squeezed into odd shapes.

Short travel means less feedback, so a fingertip that lands half on a key edge still registers the wrong letter.

That hits large fingers hardest, and it hits small hands on the far corner keys.

An external keyboard fixes both, and it's the cheapest upgrade in this whole subject.

Test before you buy

A five minute check that saves a lot of money.

Type a paragraph and watch which errors you make. Write them down rather than guessing afterwards.

Missed far keys and stretched wrists point at a span problem, so a smaller board helps.

Two letters at once and edge hits point at a fingertip problem, so a full size board with deeper keycaps helps.

I counted my own errors this way and found they were nearly all on numbers, which pointed at reach and not at fingertips.
