Gear vs Practice: What Actually Raises Your WPM
A better keyboard buys comfort and a couple of words per minute. Practice buys twenty. Here is the honest spending order if you want a faster typing speed.

The Short Answer

I've been on both sides of this. I've bought the expensive board hoping it would do something, and I've done the boring six-week practice block. Only one of them changed my number meaningfully.
That's not an argument against nice keyboards. A board you enjoy typing on is worth money for reasons that have nothing to do with WPM, and I'd defend that spending happily.
But when someone asks me how to get faster and their plan starts with a purchase, the plan is wrong, and it's worth explaining why with actual numbers rather than a lecture.
What Gear Actually Buys You
A good keyboard reduces friction in three ways. Keys register reliably, so you're not re-typing dropped characters. The typing feel is consistent, so your rhythm doesn't break. And it's comfortable enough that hour three feels like hour one.
The first two are worth a few words per minute at most, and only if you're coming from something genuinely bad — a mushy membrane board with inconsistent registration, or a laptop keyboard with 1mm of travel.
Going from a decent board to an excellent board is where the returns collapse. The measurable difference between a $60 mechanical and a $300 custom is close to zero on a typing test, whatever the reviews imply.
The third benefit is the real one and it's indirect. Comfort determines how long you'll practise, and practice time is what moves the number. That's a genuine effect, just not the one people think they're buying — as I found when I tracked 60 days of data.
What Practice Actually Buys You
The numbers here are much larger and they're well established. Someone typing at 40 WPM with poor technique can reach 70 to 80 in two to three months of consistent daily practice.
That's a 75% improvement from time, against maybe 5% from equipment. The comparison isn't close enough to be interesting.
What makes it feel less appealing is that practice is boring and buying things is fun. Fifteen minutes a day for eight weeks doesn't produce a moment of excitement anywhere in the process, which is precisely why the keyboard market exists.

The Exception: Genuinely Bad Hardware
There's one case where gear is the right first purchase, and it's worth naming because the general advice can mislead.
If your keyboard drops keystrokes, has keys that need a firm press to register, or physically hurts after twenty minutes, that's not a preference issue. You're fighting the hardware and no amount of practice fixes a board that doesn't register a keypress.
Same applies if you're getting wrist pain. Pain is a stop signal, not a tolerance test, and continuing to practise through it is how people end up with an injury that takes months to settle. Below that threshold, though, upgrading is a comfort purchase. A perfectly good $50 board will take you to 100 WPM, and plenty of people have got there on a laptop.
Where the Money Actually Helps
If you are going to spend, the order that gives the best return isn't the one the hobby recommends.

Then a keyboard that fits your hands and doesn't annoy you — which for many people means a smaller layout so the mouse sits closer, not a more expensive one.

Notice that the highest-return item on that list costs nothing. That's not a coincidence — the Wikipedia entry on words per minute is a decent reminder that professional typists hit very high speeds on mechanical typewriters, which had none of this.
The Numbers, Side by Side
Putting rough figures on it makes the comparison harder to argue with. Moving from a poor membrane board to a decent mechanical: two to five WPM, most of it from keys registering reliably. Moving from a decent mechanical to an expensive custom: essentially nothing measurable.
Switching layout — QWERTY to Colemak or Dvorak — costs you months and typically returns a modest gain at best, which is why I rarely recommend it to anyone who isn't already fast.
Learning to touch type from hunt-and-peck: 20 to 40 WPM. That's the largest single jump available to most people, and it costs nothing but weeks.
Eight weeks of daily practice on top of existing touch typing: 10 to 20 WPM. Fixing your posture so you can type for an hour without discomfort: hard to quantify, and it's the thing that makes the practice possible at all.
Stack those up and the ranking is obvious. Technique beats time, time beats hardware, and hardware only matters when it's actively getting in the way.
The Placebo Is Real and Useful
New gear makes you want to type. That enthusiasm is worth something, and I'd rather acknowledge it than pretend everyone is a rational actor optimising WPM per pound spent.
I typed noticeably more in the fortnight after building a board I liked. My speed went up in that period, and attributing the gain to the switches would have been wrong — it was the extra practice the excitement caused.
So if buying a keyboard gets you practising daily, the purchase paid for itself through an entirely different mechanism than the marketing claims. That's fine. Just don't repeat it every three months expecting the same effect, because the novelty is the active ingredient and it doesn't restock.
The people I know who type fastest have unremarkable keyboards and a long habit. The people with the most impressive setups are usually somewhere around 70 WPM, which tells its own story.
A Plan That Actually Works
Two weeks of technique work first. Fingers on home row, no looking down, accuracy over speed, and accept that you'll be slower for a fortnight. This is the part that determines your ceiling.
Then six weeks of fifteen minutes a day, split between timed tests and something with pressure. Racing works well here because you'll push harder against a person than against a clock — that's the whole reason our race mode exists, and it's the most reliable practice format I've found.
Measure once a week, not once a day. Daily variance is large enough to be discouraging and tells you nothing.
After eight weeks, if your setup is uncomfortable, buy the keyboard. You'll know what you actually want by then, having spent two months noticing what irritates you, and you'll have earned the upgrade with a number that improved for the right reason.
